The Benefits of Green Exercise
If you often find going to a gym is more hard work and a drudgery than fun, then perhaps you are exercising in the wrong place! Studies have found that ‘green’ exercising – outdoors and in the fresh air – can have health benefits on many levels – physiological, psychological, biochemical and social – and can have a positive impact on mental health and in disease prevention. A study in 2009 also showed that exercising outdoors may help increase the staying power of people who live sedentary lives who are more likely to stick to an exercise regime if it is performed outdoors.
So what could this look like for you? Perhaps you can get out for a brisk walk, or enjoy a bike ride with family or friends? Take advantage of the summer months, and take your yoga mat to your favourite outdoor spot, or go exploring on a nature trail or in a country park. Many have initiatives to get you out and about and moving, and if you struggle to stay motivated, ditching the treadmill and getting outdoors could just be what you need to put you on the path to success!
